Practice in choosing designs


Review Tables 13-11 (comparing the ideal situation for different designs) and 13-12 (determining whether a factor should be within- or between- subjects). Then, to let students show that they understand the strengths and weaknesses of the different designs, you could
  1. Have students complete this worksheet.
  2. Present students with factorial experiments and ask them to guess which design was used and why
  3. Have students find experiments in textbooks and ask them to justify which type of design should have been used.
  4. Ask students to figure out why, in perception experiments that employ factorial designs, within-subjects designs tend to be used, whereas in social psychology experiments employing factorial designs, between subject designs tend to be used.
