Practice in choosing designs
Review Tables 13-11 (comparing the ideal situation for different designs) and 13-12 (determining whether a factor should be within- or
between- subjects). Then, to let students show that they understand the strengths and weaknesses of the different designs, you could
- Have students complete this worksheet.
- Present students with factorial experiments and ask them to guess which design was used and why
- Have students find experiments in textbooks and ask them to justify which type of design should have been used.
- Ask students to figure out why, in perception experiments that employ factorial designs, within-subjects designs tend to be used, whereas in social psychology experiments employing factorial designs, between subject designs tend to be used.
